Summer Exhibition

Event Information:

Tadhg Mae celebrates the summer with artists including PATRICK CAULFIELD, DAMIEN HIRST, DAVID HOCKNEY, LYNTON LAMB, GEORGES MATHIEU and RICHARD SMITH.

From country house summer lawns and bouncing cricket balls to heavily scented roses and fruit-hued abstraction, Tadhg Mae’s take on summer is in turns spiritual, surreal and playful.

Taking a holiday from our trademark crepuscular style, our June to July show encompasses all that’s wonderful about this time of year. In true Summer Exhibition style, there’s a work for every taste.

Damien Hirst’s indulgently garish ‘Fruitful (Small)’ (2020) is heavily ripe with colour, while Lynton Lamb’s ‘The Country House’ (1951) captures a post-war, simmering, hazy afternoon and Patrick Procktor’s ‘Roses ‘(1973) brings the prickly bloom to bold, rude life.

We celebrate the golden, bucket-and-spade holiday with George Newnes’ vintage educational poster that captures perfectly a bucket-and-spade holiday. But it’s not all so straightforward; our summer tomatoes are Killer rather than salad-friendly (‘Attack of the Killer Tomatoes’ (1978)) and our lazy lunch is Patrick Caulfield’s juicy ‘Dressed Lobster’  (1980).

If you’d like to go a little further afield for your summer trip, perhaps you’ll be swayed by George Mathieu’s bold, colour-saturated airline advert; ‘India, Air France’ (1968).

This is a chance to take a holiday in the sun, to revel in bright colour and picture-postcard landscapes, to celebrate the lighter months and balmy days.
