Butchins is an award-winning disabled filmmaker, writer and artist. His ground-breaking work across television and art provides rare insight into the disabled experience. Through documentary and personal art practice, he attempts to convey the humanity, value, and self-determination of the disabled community on its own terms.The Floracide works draw on traditions of Nature Morte, these invocations interpret and translate the symbolism of Vanitas paintings into contemporary symbolic representations of exclusion and otherness. Butchins uses the facility and vunerability of cut flowers to reflect the challenges and social stigmas faced by individuals with impairments, providing a trenchant insight into the complex experiences of living with a disability.
